Make Your NI Home More Energy Efficient

Many people believe that making your home more energy efficient is a green choice and do so to benefit the environment. However, with the energy prices on the rise, it’s also good for your bank account. There are many things you can do when it comes to saving energy and we at ABC Electrical NI are here to help.

Firstly, before knowing exactly how to reduce your energy costs, it would be very beneficial to hire an electrician to perform an energy assessment on your property. This will help you pinpoint exactly where you are using the most energy in your home. This will provide you with the information you need to start making positive changes to reduce your energy consumption!

REPLACE YOUR BULBS

As we head towards winter and the longer nights, using your lights at home becomes a necessity. There are a few ways you can lower your energy consumption with your lighting. Whilst simply turning your lights off is the easiest option, it can be hard to do during this time.

The second best option is to switch to LED bulbs. Most homes use incandescent light bulbs which are some of the biggest energy wasters in your home. Whilst LED bulbs are dearer than incandescent bulbs, they will save you money in the long run. LED bulbs waste a lot less energy, capable of turning 70% of their energy into light rather than wasting a lot of energy on heat. To replace a standard 40W incandescent, you would only need a 6W LED bulb to produce the same amount of light!

REDUCE PHANTOM ENERGY

Phantom energy is energy lost when leaving your appliances on standby. It is very easy to turn off your TV using the remote control and head out for the day. But did you know that this is still using energy, causing your bills to rise? Phantom energy can account for up to 10% of a home’s energy bill. By simply taking the time to turn off everything at the plug when finished, you should be able to save yourself a load of money each month.

ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES

One of the best things you can do to save energy is buying energy efficient appliances. Luckily, in the UK, it is very easy to find out how energy efficient appliances are. This is thanks to the UK’s handy rating system. Most appliances will come with a label, highlighting how energy efficient they are with ratings from A (very good) to G (very bad). Whilst new energy efficient appliances may be costly to buy, they will save you money in the long run.
