Electrical Safety Tips For NI’s Bad Weather

Despite boasting one of the world’s more temperate climates, the downside of Northern Ireland’s weather means that Blighty is subjected to prolonged periods of rain, wind and storms in the winter months. With this weather comes an increased risk of damage to your property, but there are easy steps you can take to safeguard your home before a storm begins brewing. Remember Storm Eunice? We have our fair share of storms here in Northern Ireland.

Here at ABC Electrical, we cover areas such as Portadown, Lurgan, Banbridge, Craigavon and Newry. We have years of experience in the electrical industry in Northern Ireland, with clients across areas such as Portadown, Lurgan and Banbridge, and a proven reputation in providing the highest standard of service. ABC Electrical’s ethos is that ‘No job is too big or too small.’

So, whether it’s raining cats and dogs or blowing a gale, here are some tips from ABC Electrical to help keep your home electrically safe:

Always remember your cables

Ensure all power cables and extension leads should be checked regularly, and repaired or replaced as required. As a rule of thumb, don’t run cables under rugs and furniture, as they can cause a trip hazard, overheat or get crushed and damaged.

Plug Sockets

Don’t overload sockets – overloading plug sockets is a common cause of electrical fires. Always make sure the sockets are cool to the touch. And only plug one heat-producing appliance into a multi-way socket at a time.

Keep your home tidy

Keep unused cables tidy and secure – electrical safety doesn’t only apply when cables are in use. Make sure they’re stored away safely when you’re not using them. It’s best not to wrap cables around objects (like your hairdryer or laptop plug), as it can stretch them, and cause overheating. And never put an electricity cable on a hot surface, as it can damage the insulation and wiring inside.

We do cover Belfast, Armagh, Portadown, Lurgan, Banbridge, Craigavon and Newry, however, we do accommodate customers across Northern Ireland on domestic electrical jobs. With a proven domestic record across Northern Ireland and specifically Belfast, Armagh, Portadown, Banbridge, Craigavon and Newry, we want our clients to be able to relax knowing their homes are in safe electrical hands.
